How Exhaust Systems Work

Your Honda exhaust system works in stages when it comes to cleaning and dispersing the noxious fumes your engine generates when it's burning fuel. While it sounds simple, it's a complex process involving numerous parts.

First, those fumes pass through the catalytic converter. There, metals like palladium, platinum, and rhodium capture the toxic molecules to separate them into oxygen and nitrogen. The former is allowed to pass through the system, while the nitrogen is retained. That process burns hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, with basically water vapors and carbon dioxide remaining.

The gases then move on to the exhaust manifold and then to the exhaust pipe. At the same time, the resonator and muffler are ensuring optimal airflow and minimizing engine noise. Lastly, the tail pipe releases the cleaned gases harmlessly into the atmosphere. The result? A cleaner environment for all.

How to Spot Exhaust System Problems

Even the highest quality exhaust system components can go bad, though. Replacing them as soon as possible is the smart, safe choice. Signs of failure include:

  • Poorer fuel efficiency
  • The "Check Engine" warning light comes on
  • You detect the distinct odor of rotten eggs
  • You hear weird noises from the muffler and exhaust
